From Bench to Starter
Clemson punter Jack Smith talked to the media today reflecting on the journey that led him to earn the starting punting role. While he had mentally prepared to be a starter for some time, Coach Swinney didn’t officially confirm it until just before the season. “He was like, ‘Hey, man. I’m going to give you a shot.’ I was like, ‘All right, man. That’s what I came here to do,’” Smith said.
Fuel to the Fire
Questions and skepticism surrounding the punter position have become motivation rather than a distraction for Smith. “It feels good to prove people wrong,” he said. “I know my potential, and that’s nothing anybody can add to or take away.”
Training and Coaching Make the Difference
Early in his Clemson career, punters had little coaching and often spent significant time observing. The addition of Coach Ryan Allen and offseason work with former Clemson punter Dawson Zimmerman transformed Smith’s preparation. Smith talked about training in Atlanta during the offseason with both Allen and Zimmerman.
Mental Approach: Patience and Faith
A key improvement for Jack Smith has been his mental approach. Past seasons were filled with fear and uncertainty, but guidance from a coach with experience at the highest levels, combined with faith and mental cues, has made all the difference. “I already know I’m going to kick it good. I’m going to focus on being patient and controlling what I can,” Smith said. “I’ve prayed so much for this moment… and it’s 100% paying off.”
Special Teams Support
Smith highlighted the importance of his teammates on special teams, particularly his up men and coverage players. “We have the best athletes on the punt team… and I’ve got some really great protectors. Ain’t nobody touching me,” he said with a smile.
Aggression Meets Precision
While punting requires finesse, Smith admitted he still has a competitive edge. “I grew up a quarterback d-end… I live for it. I want to hurt somebody. I still have that bone in my body,” he joked, emphasizing that while his main role is punting, he’s ready to bring intensity if the opportunity arises.
Faith at the Core
Jack Smith repeatedly highlighted how much his faith has guided him. He reads Scripture daily, prays regularly, and leans on spiritual routines to stay focused and calm during games. “It’s a foundation for me. I can’t do anything without that… having that presence and peace lets me focus on what I can control,” he said. His faith also provides perspective, helping him manage pressure and maintain consistency.
The Road to Clemson for Jack Smith
Reflecting on his path, Smith shared a story of flexibility and resilience. Initially a quarterback in high school, he moved through multiple positions before settling on punting, a decision guided by a cousin who played collegiately at Southern Miss as a punter. “Ever since then, I’ve just bought into it… the rest is history,” Smith said.
Focus on Consistency
Now, with two strong performances under his belt, Jack Smith is focused on consistency and continual improvement. “Two games isn’t anything. I’ve got to keep stacking days and keep the same mindset… just control what I can control,” he said multiple times.
From a high school quarterback in Alabama to Clemson’s starting punter, Jack Smith’s journey is a testament to preparation, perseverance, and faith, both on and off the field.
