Clemson receives a transfer pitcher from conference opponent, Boston College.
As Clemson Softball looks to reload its roster for the 2026 season, the program took a major step toward stabilizing its pitching staff with the addition of former Boston College standout Abby Dunning. The veteran right-hander announced her commitment to Clemson, becoming the team’s second transfer portal addition this offseason.
With the graduation of 2025 ACC Pitcher of the Year Reese Basinger and senior Brooke McCubbin, the Tigers were left needing to replace a staggering amount of experience in the circle. Combined, Basinger and McCubbin accounted for almost over 80% of Clemson’s innings last season, making pitching depth a clear priority heading into the summer.
Dunning, a native of Burr Ridge, Illinois, arrives in Tiger Town with a strong ACC resume. During her breakout 2024 campaign with Boston College, she pitched 182 innings and posted a career-best 2.46 ERA while holding opponents to a .207 batting average. Her performance that season earned her All-ACC honors and established her as one of the most reliable arms in the conference.
Although she missed most of the 2025 season due to injury, Dunning’s potential remains high. When healthy, she’s known for her command, composure, and ability to go deep into games—traits that will be very valuable for a Clemson squad looking to remain competitive in the ACC.
The Tigers aren’t done yet in the portal, but the addition of Abby Dunning is a strong signal that head coach John Rittman is focused on building this team back up for the 2026 season.
